Understanding Depression

Depression is more than just feeling sad or down—it’s like this heavy weight that makes everything feel harder, even things you usually enjoy. It can make you feel stuck, tired, or even numb, like you’re not yourself. But it’s important to know that you’re not alone, and this isn’t something you have to face on your own. There are ways to work through it, and it’s okay to ask for help when it feels overwhelming

My Techniques for Depression Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most researched and effective treatments for depression. It focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviours and replacing them with more realistic and positive ones. It’s designed to give you tools you can use for the long term, not just quick fixes. CBT usually includes structured sessions with clear goals, like getting back to activities you enjoy and learning new ways to handle challenges.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

IPT is a time-limited therapy focusing on interpersonal relationships and social functioning, which can be sources of depression. It helps you improve communication and understand patterns in your relationships that might be contributing to your depression. IPT is especially helpful if your struggles are linked to relationship challenges, big life changes, or grief.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MCBT)

(MBCT) is designed to help with depression by combining mindfulness practices with therapy. It teaches you to notice your thoughts and emotions without getting caught up in them, helping you manage depressive feelings in a calmer, more balanced way.”

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on how your past experiences, unconscious thoughts, and emotions shape your current behaviour and relationships. It helps you uncover unresolved issues and emotional conflicts, offering insight into the deeper causes of depression. This approach is especially beneficial for those wanting to understand and address the root of their struggles. Research shows it can be particularly effective for chronic depression.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

(DBT) has proven effective for depression involving intense emotional ups and downs. It combines mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal skills to help manage emotions and improve relationships. DBT is particularly helpful for individuals struggling with depression that involves self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

What’s on your mind?

How do I know if I'm experiencing depression or just feeling sad?

Depression goes beyond temporary sadness—it’s a long-lasting feeling of emptiness, hopelessness, or lack of motivation that persists for more than two weeks. It may also involve changes in sleep, appetite, energy levels, or interest in activities you once enjoyed. If these feelings are affecting your daily life, a professional assessment can provide clarity and support.

How can therapy help me with my depression?

Therapy provides a safe, supportive space where you can explore the causes of your depression and understand how it affects your life. Together, we’ll work to identify patterns in your thoughts and behaviours, develop healthier coping strategies, and create a personalized plan to help you feel more balanced and in control.

How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?

Choosing the right therapist is an important decision, and I want to make sure you feel comfortable and supported. That’s why I offer a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your goals and challenges. This session gives us a chance to connect, explore how I work, and see if my approach feels like the right fit for you.

How often will I need therapy sessions, and for how long?

The frequency and duration of therapy depend on your specific needs and goals. Many clients start with weekly sessions for the first 4 weeks and adjust as they progress. While some see significant improvement within a few months, others may choose ongoing support to maintain their well-being.

Can therapy help if my depression has been ongoing for years?

Yes, therapy can help even if you’ve been struggling with depression for a long time. Together, we’ll work to uncover the deeper patterns and experiences that contribute to your depression and develop new strategies for creating lasting change. Healing is always possible, no matter how long you’ve been experiencing these feelings.
